Noted as the coolest wine growing region in South Africa with its high altitude and climate conditions which allow grapes to ripen slowly, a little more patience is required, but the results are wines with character defined by excellent purity, distinct minerality, density of fruit and elegance.
The three Elgin Valley wines honoured at the Platter’s awards ceremony on Thursday, 29th October 2016 are:
Mountain Reserve 2011 following in the footsteps of the 2010 vintage. The achievement is bittersweet in many ways. Sadly, 2011 is our last vintage of the Mountain Reserve. We decided after the 2011 harvest to grub this 3.7ha block on the basis that yields were unsustainably low. If there was ever a wine true to the adage that vines must struggle to produce greatness, this was it. Only 2,900 bottles were made. We hope you find a bottle and enjoy the last of this remarkable wine.
The Elgin Wine Route is situated a mere 70 kilometers from Cape Town, just off the N2.Offering wine lovers an array of cellar experiences, these producers pride themselves in the knowledge that they capture the essence of the exquisite beauty which surrounds them in each bottle of wine made.
